Sung Yoo was born and raised in South Korea. He earned a Bachelor of Theology from Methodist Theological Seminary in Seoul before coming to the United States in 1998. He later received a Master of Divinity from Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston, Illinois, and a Ph.D. from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville.
Sung was ordained in 2003 and served faithfully as a pastor in United Methodist churches for twenty years. For him, ministry has never been simply a profession—it is a calling to serve Jesus Christ and shepherd His people.
In 2023, Sung entered a deep season of prayer and discernment. As the United Methodist denomination made decisions that he believed no longer reflected the authority of Scripture, he knew he had to follow Christ in obedience above all else.
It was a difficult time. Pastoring was the only vocation he had ever known, and there was no clear “Plan B.”
Then Sung heard about Nokesville Methodist Church. The congregation had recently disaffiliated from the United Methodist denomination and was prayerfully seeking a pastor.
He reached out to explore whether God might be calling him to serve there.
When he met with the church’s leaders, he remembers thinking, “This feels almost too good to be true.” It felt nothing short of miraculous.
Very quickly, a shared vision became clear:
to be part of a fresh movement of God—renewing hearts for Jesus and seeking the revival of His Church through the power of the Holy Spirit.
Today we are seeing the Holy Spirit move in powerful ways. It humbles and amazes Pastor Sung that God has invited him to be part of this work.
